Finding Integrity in the Eco-Paper Market
The rise in green consumer concern in 2007 encouraged increasingly sophisticated environmental engagement by commercial paper consumers. In total, more than 520 Canadian book publishers, magazines, newspapers, catalogue manufacturers and printers are now implementing their Ancient Forest Friendly™ or eco-paper purchasing policies. Growing numbers of publishers and printers are taking noteworthy leadership on environmental issues and demonstrating that printed materials do not have to be produced to the detriment of our climate, our forests and our planet. Canadian publishers and printers stand proudly at the forefront of this movement.

JK Rowling Awarded Order of the Forest for "Greening" Harry Potter Series
Before a rare public reading at the opening event of YoungIFOA in Toronto today, JK Rowling accepted an award in recognition of the role she has played helping save Canada’s and the world’s forests. Markets Initiative presented Rowling with the Order of the Forest, citing Rowling’s direct hand in transforming the publishing industry. Previous recipients include writer Alice Munro and publisher McClelland & Stewart.

Independent Research Finds FSC to be Most Effective Certification Option for Sustainable Forest Management
The most up-to-date and independent cross-analysis of the four
forest certification schemes operating in Canada: Forest Stewardship
Council (FSC), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Sustainable
Forestry Initiative (SFI), and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest
Certifications (PEFC).
At a recent private industry conference, Markets Initiative launched this first of its kind comparison by ÉEM inc. that independently concludes:
- FSC is the forest certification most likely to result in sustainable forest management, and
- Recycled content is key to the environmental paper solution.
